International Migrants Day 2023: Theme, History, Significance, Highest Migration Rate

 

Every year on December 18, International Migrants Day is observed to honor the contributions made by millions of migrants around the globe. The day highlights the issues that migrants encounter globally. For migrants, today is significant.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that “Act Today for a Better Tomorrow for All: Improving the Health of Migrants to Unleash the Power of Migration” would be the topic of International Migrants Day in 2023.

A resolution on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 18, 1990. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed December 18 as International Migrants Day on December 4, 2000.

It has been observed annually ever since. Every member state of the UN observes the day. The process of migration is natural. Migration can be caused by war, conflict, instability, the economy, and the effects of climate change.

Migrants are the “most vulnerable and marginalized” groups, according to the UN. Generally speaking, migrant laborers run the danger of experiencing job uncertainty and subpar working conditions.

The purpose of International Migrants Day is to draw attention to the predicament of migrant workers. It is important to emphasize their contributions, problems, and the role of immigration.

The main UN body, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), honors this significant day by promoting migrant rights.

According to the WHO, “migrants bring a multitude of skills that can benefit and enrich host countries and communities” in the report for International Migrants Day in 2023.
