Italy Signs Agreement With The UNHCR To Bring 1,500 Refugees From Libya

Italy and the United Nations High Commissioner for migrants (UNHCR) have inked a deal for the evacuation of 1,500 North African migrants who require international protection from Libya.

As per the deal, Italy will accept Libyan refugees. It will take three years to complete the process. People who were compelled to leave their native countries due to violence and conflict will benefit from the deal.

Numerous non-governmental organizations have documented recurrent instances of abuse against refugees, especially women and children, in Libyan detention facilities in recent years.

Doctors Without Borders, or Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), reported that inmates, including those receiving care from MSF staff, were beaten by guards at detention facilities. The beatings caused the migrants to sustain cuts, bruises, fractures, and physical damage.

The majority of migrants left their native countries due to violence, conflict, and war. The majority of migrants, including minors, trafficked women, and survivors of abuse and torture, became momentarily stranded in Libya.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Italy will provide assistance to these migrants.
