What Actually Is A Burnout?

Recently there has been discussion around the topic of burnout — whether it is good or bad, how it affects one’s mental state, and how it can be addressed. Schuyler Laparle, a lecturer at Tilburg University, provided some insights on these questions regarding burnout.

Burnout is recognized as a problem globally. It occurs when one works beyond their physical and mental capacity on a sustained basis. In modern corporations, workloads have increased drastically, leaving employees with little time for personal life, family, or rest.

As an example from India, an IIT-IIM graduate committed suicide in March 2024, unable to handle workplace pressures. While some argued he should have resigned or pursued startups, his precious qualifications ended up going to waste.

Potential solutions were proposed. Employers can foster an environment where employees feel valued, heard, and understood. Problems should be addressed promptly to prevent burnout. Strict punctuality can backfire if it forces people to work when unable to. Providing breaks is key, as is flexibility over deadlines to allow high-quality work. A balanced approach is needed between work and well-being to create a healthy, flexible work culture.

Not all work solely for financial reasons — some from wealthy families work for independence or passion, not a necessity. Therefore, companies must evaluate all employees fairly to avoid penalizing genuinely committed individuals.
