UN Forum Addresses Racial Discrimination Against People of African Descent

UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a video message lauding the achievements and dedication of individuals of African descent globally, while also acknowledging the persistent racial segregation and disparities affecting Black communities worldwide. He underscored the significance of the Permanent Forum as a testament to the global community’s commitment to addressing these injustices, emphasizing that mere acknowledgment is insufficient and urging concrete actions to ensure the full and equal human rights of individuals of African descent.

Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif commended the organizational prowess of the Permanent Forum, noting its ability to convene a third high-profile session within a relatively short period since its inception. She praised the forum’s extensive agenda, which includes 70 side events focusing on crucial issues such as climate justice, education, and healthcare for individuals of African descent. Al-Nashif urged member states to actively participate in discussions and implement proposals derived from the forum to effectively combat systemic discrimination and promote equality.

A central topic of the Permanent Forum’s discussions revolves around the achievements, challenges, and aspirations regarding the proposed extension of the International Decade for people of African descent. Al-Nashif expressed support for extending the Decade, initiated by the General Assembly in 2015 to address issues of recognition, justice, and advancement for people of African descent. The discussions aim to devise strategies to combat discrimination, eradicate segregation, and ensure the full inclusion of individuals of African descent in society as equal citizens.

All reports generated from the discussions and outcomes of the Permanent Forum will be presented during the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council in September and the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly, commencing in the same month. Al-Nashif reiterated her office’s dedication to promoting the essential, inclusive, and secure support of individuals of African descent in public life as a critical aspect of combating systemic bigotry. This commitment underscores ongoing efforts to address racial discrimination, promote equality, and advance justice on a global scale.

The Permanent Forum serves as a vital platform for addressing the enduring racial discrimination and disparities faced by individuals of African descent worldwide. Under the leadership of figures like UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Deputy High Commissioner Nada Al-Nashif, the forum provides the opportunity for meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and action to enhance the rights and dignity of Black communities. By focusing on tangible measures, including expanding the International Decade for people of African descent and implementing recommendations, the international community can collaborate to create a more equitable and impartial world for all.
