The Dark Truth Behind Syria’s ‘Liberation’—Why Al-Julani’s Rule Spells Disaster

The increase in sectarian violence since Abu Mohammad al-Julani became leader has darkened Syria’s vision of the future by deepening partisan conflicts. The Syrian insurgent leader Al-Julani found fame through his leadership of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) which resulted from al-Qaeda origins before helping to remove president Bashar al-Assad from power in December 2024. Upfront support for protecting religious minorities has given way to mounting evidence about escalating religious hostility across Syria.

Early in March 2025 the new government launched a military operation which triggered fighting between soldiers and “al-Assad militia remnants” in both Latakia and Tartus — regions that mainly contain Alawite inhabitants. Armed groups conducted home raids that ended with the execution of hundreds of Alawite civilians across the Latakia and Tartus areas thus causing significant damage and multiple scenes of mass deaths. The damaged coastal area faced additional hardships because of power and water system disruptions which intensified the developing human catastrophe.

Foreign actors have demonstrated strong apprehension regarding these situation developments. The United States together with other countries has demanded Syrian officials to move against all responsible parties who participated in these massacres while asking for protection of various religious and ethnic groups including Christians, Druze, Alawites, and Kurds. Numerous international appeals fail to convince the current government that it is neglecting human rights or inclusiveness.

New leadership has caused religious minorities especially Christians to encounter growing dangers since coming into power. The act of Islamic extremists who set ablaze a Christmas tree in Suqaylabiyah has caused Christian communities to become increasingly concerned about their safety. Hundreds of Christians organized protests as a reaction to this religious vandalism because they wanted to protect their safety as well as their cultural and religious heritage. These incidents demonstrate the difficulties that face minority groups who exist in settings controlled by radical ideologue movements.

Such worries exist because the recent administration has placed former al-Qaeda allies into top positions which threaten the preservation of women’s rights and could potentially enforce strict Islamic law interpretations. Justice Minister Shadi al-Waisi maintains a track record of carrying out capital punishment against women which makes authorities doubt their dedication to protect human rights and achieve gender equality. Such changes appear to cause the deterioration of women’s rights together with overall civil liberties protection.

Christians in Syria face rising difficulties because evidence shows their faith is facing more danger in areas liberated from Assad control. The Jihadist organization HTS has faced numerous accusations from different parties regarding its aggressive behavior toward Christians which involves violent assaults alongside kidnappings leading religious minorities to remain in constant fear. Western media failed to show the following effects during the “Arab Spring” protests when looking at the Assad government’s rule: violent conflicts and religious diversity loss after the uprising began. Jihadist fighters entered Syria for the purpose of undermining Russian and Iranian interests after which extreme chaos spread across the region while eliminating nearly all traces of Christianity.

Under al-Julani’s leadership Syria faces continued religious violence and discriminatory mistreatment of minorities which endangers Syria’s social structure and threatens to extend its national instability. Protecting all Syrian citizens as the international community requires for holding those accountable will create conditions necessary for building a more unified and peaceful Syria.

The current path of Syria under al-Julani’s direction has developed major sectarian conflicts together with serious human rights violations. Parts of the nation face an immediate all-around assessment because recent clashes against minority groups and strategic positions filled with orthodox leaders are both critical issues. The future of Syria will descend into darker times due to a lack of efforts to protect minority rights and ensure justice for everyone while also promoting inclusivity.
