Friba Rezayee Urges IOC Action On Taliban's Women's Rights Violations
Friba Rezayee Takes a Stand Against the Taliban’s Oppression of Afghan Women
Afghanistan’s pioneering female Olympian Friba Rezayee has forcefully spoken out against the Taliban’s restrictive policies targeting women’s rights. With the Taliban’s resurgence and reimposition of harsh rule, Rezayee is campaigning for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to prohibit Afghanistan from competing in the upcoming Paris Games.
Her passionate appeal stems from grave concerns over the Taliban’s appalling human rights record, particularly regarding women and children. Rezayee argues that allowing Afghanistan to participate under such circumstances would send the wrong message and normalize its dangerous conduct.
The Taliban has implemented extreme measures severely curtailing women’s freedoms, including closing girls’ high schools, imposing travel bans without male guardians, and restricting access to public places. Such regressive policies have drawn global condemnation from rights advocates.
In response, the IOC faces criticism for its engagement approach rather than supporting a ban. While acknowledging worries over the Taliban’s treatment of women, the IOC opted for dialog rather than decisive action.
Despite facing threats, Rezayee remains resolute in her activism. Through her nonprofit empowering Afghan women, she continues enabling education and empowering female athletes as a symbol of hope during difficult times. Her advocacy exemplifies resilience in the face of adversity as she fights for human rights and women’s dignity.
