UN Official Condemns Russian Actions in Ukraine

At a UN Security Council meeting, Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo criticized Russia’s plan to hold elections in illegally occupied parts of Ukraine. She said this violates international law as Russia is the occupying force and must respect Ukrainian laws in those areas. DiCarlo denounced Russia’s attempted annexation of Crimea, parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, noting UN resolutions term such land grabs through force as illegal.

She highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine due to Russia’s ongoing aerial assaults. Reports reveal widespread torture of civilians by Russian authorities, which DiCarlo said must be investigated. She acknowledged Ukrainian women’s disproportionate suffering as refugees and their contributions to humanitarian aid and Ukraine’s future.
