Shein Denies Allegations of Worker Exploitation Hidden in Clothing Tags

A concerning video on TikTok recently went viral, compiling suspicious messages found on Shein clothing tags like “Help Me” and “SOS”. This led many to believe the fast fashion brand was mistreating workers in its factories. While unverified, the video amassed over 40 million views.

Other Shein customers then closely examined their clothing tags for any similar hidden pleas. One tag read “Tumble dry, do not dry clean. Due to the water-saving technology, need your help washing with the soft detergent for the first time to make the goods softer.” Though this phrasing raised initial worries, it was clarified as an awkward translation simply requesting gentle detergent on the first wash.

Shein directly addressed the conspiracy theory by releasing a video providing evidence the tag images did not originate from their products. Some were from other companies, while others had no relation to Shein. The company explained the “Need your help” tag’s intent was washing instructions, not distress signals.

Despite Shein’s $100 billion valuation, reports allege non-disclosure of required supply chain data in the UK and 75-hour work weeks for Guangzhou migrant workers. While pledging commitment to ethical practices, criticism notes past controversial products and copying accusations. This checkered record raises ongoing concerns from consumers and advocacy groups.
