NGOs collectively address UNHRC members on human rights concerns in Iran

As the UN Human Rights Council convenes, a coalition of Iranian and international human rights groups is urgently calling on governments to renew the mandates of the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran and the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission (FFMI). These mechanisms are vital to addressing ongoing rights abuses in Iran and upholding accountability.

Severe violations like those during the 2022 protests require continued monitoring and engagement via the Special Rapporteur to push for change. The FFMI additionally investigates specific incidents and their widespread impacts. Both play crucial yet distinct roles in tackling impunity through fact-finding, outreach, and reporting.

Renewal sends a message that serious abuses must cease. It supports victims and defenders facing reprisals and shows solidarity with millions suffering systemic violations of dignity. This is a moral duty — not just a procedural one.

As victims seek justice and redress, the international community cannot stay silent. It must back independent oversight and stand up for accountability. Through cooperative but firm action via these renewed mandates, governments have a key role in helping end Iran’s rights crisis.
