Israel Violates Human Rights & Ignores World Court Orders
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) recently issued a legally binding ruling ordering Israel to lift restrictions on basic services and humanitarian aid entering Gaza. The court gave Israel one month to report on compliance. The goal was to provide relief for the 2 million Palestinians living under Israel’s crippling 15-year blockade. Human rights groups warned that shortages of food, water, electricity, and medicine were pushing the crisis to a tipping point and threatening civilian lives.
However, according to Human Rights Watch and other rights organizations, Israel has defiantly disregarded the clear court order. In the month since the ICJ ruling, Israel has continued blocking vital fuel, food, water, and medicine shipments from reaching Gaza residents in desperate need.
Local and international aid groups operating in Gaza reported that fewer supply trucks have entered after the ruling than before. Only 93 trucks were permitted from January 27 to February 21, compared to 147 trucks in previous weeks. By denying access to essentials like fuel and water, rights advocates say Israel is unlawfully punishing the civilian population. rights organizations stationed inside Gaza have documented and expressed grave concerns about Israel’s persisting lack of transparency and due process in rejecting and delaying humanitarian aid trucks. Some groups even had their offices destroyed by Israeli forces in the weeks after the ICJ ruling, further obstructing relief efforts.
Rather than comply in good faith, observers warn that Israel has tightened restrictions on Gaza over the past month. As a consequence, the humanitarian situation has severely deteriorated. With water, fuel, food, and electricity completely scarce, over 3,400 Palestinians have died from preventable causes amid worsening conditions since late January.
Leading health groups classify food insecurity levels as “catastrophic,” warning Gaza faces an unprecedented hunger crisis and mass loss of lives if the aid blockade continues. Over 75% of Gazans are now considered acutely food insecure.
According to Human Rights Watch’s Omar Shakir, “The Israeli government has simply ignored the ICJ ruling, and in some ways even intensified its repression against Palestinians in Gaza.” Rights advocates argue Israel’s open defiance of the clear court order seriously undermines international rule of law and weakens global norms for civilian protection. Inaction, they warn, sets a dangerous precedent that powerful states can disregard judicial rulings without consequence.
