Shambhu Border witnesses violence as Police resort to tear gas amid farmers’ protest
In response to farmers from various unions marching toward New Delhi to protest, Delhi Police beefed up security at borders by establishing layered barricades at Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur entry points, deploying police and paramilitary personnel in riot gear. The Delhi Metro also took precautions like controlling passenger entry/exits and briefly shutting some doors. When talks failed, police used tear gas to disperse crowds near Ambala, over 200km from Delhi, and deployed innovative techniques like airborne gas canister robots. Punjab was placed on high alert with 70% of state police placed on active duty, while protestors were not prevented from traveling. The farmers are demanding legislation for MSP guarantees, implementing the Swaminathan Commission recommendations, farm debt waiver, pensions, and justice for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
