London: Upcoming Human Rights Watch Film Festival to celebrate people’s courage

The Human Rights Watch Film Festival, running from March 14–22 at the Barbican and Rich Mix in London, includes in-depth question-and-answer sessions and panel discussions with filmmakers, subjects, activists, and Human Rights Watch researchers after each screening.

Now in its 28th year, the program features 10 award-winning international feature films in partnership with Barbican Cinema and Rich Mix, supported by People’s Postcode Lottery donors.

The majority will also stream across the UK and Ireland on the festival website from March 18–24. Tickets went on sale to the public on February 8, with options to make the event affordable for all.

This edition celebrates the intersection of art and human rights advocacy. Festival director John Biaggi said the 10 films spotlight young people’s energy and resolve opposing power structures.

Insights into the opening and closing night films:

  • Mediha, the opening film by Hasan Oswald, intimately portrays a teenage Yazidi girl’s return from ISIS captivity.

  • Summer Qamp, Jen Markowitz’s closing film, offers an uplifting, funny, and moving look at a Canadian camp where LGBT teens freely explore their identities, far from political battles against them.

People’s Postcode Lottery head of charities Laura Chow said the festival “inspires us to celebrate individuals defending freedom and rights.” The filmmakers will attend the opening and closing screenings in person.

The event aims to amplify marginalized voices, raise awareness of important issues, and foster justice and equality on the global stage. Stay tuned for further updates.
