Colorado Lawmakers Introduce Bills To Protect Renters’ Rights
Colorado and Washington state lawmakers have introduced bills to strengthen renter protections in response to rising housing costs and eviction cases. Colorado bills would require valid reasons for evictions like unpaid rent to prevent retaliation, waive eviction fees, and address towing and safety issues, while opponents argue this may increase landlord costs and deter housing investment. Washington’s HB 2114 proposes a 7% annual limit on rent increases after a one-year lease and caps late fees at 1.5% of rent to provide stability against large hikes. Supporters believe these measures are needed given Denver’s high eviction rates and tenants’ financial strain, but opponents say existing laws suffice and the bills could burden landlords; the bills now face committee hearings and votes.
