Skilled Bangladeshi Workers Struggles After Completion of Major Projects
Bridges and expressways are among the many large-scale development projects that Bangladesh has witnessed in recent years. However, many of these projects are now completed, and the laborers who constructed them are unemployed. Having worked on such large projects, they are skilled individuals, yet they are having trouble finding new employment.
An account of a man going by the pseudonym Mehedi Hassan illustrates this issue. He was employed on the massive N8 Expressway, which was connected to the well-known Padma Bridge.
Despite having a construction diploma, he is currently a rickshaw driver because he was unable to find employment in the field. He attempted to obtain employment overseas but was duped by dishonest brokers, leaving him in debt.
Experts claim that because of their experience, these workers would be excellent candidates for professional positions abroad. However, Bangladesh lacks a strong framework to assist them in locating these positions. Furthermore, because unskilled laborers are easier to exploit abroad, organizations that ought to assist frequently favor transferring them there.
Expert Dr. Nurul Islam thinks it’s a squandered opportunity. According to him, these laborers are highly skilled and may succeed in positions outside of Bangladesh. They are knowledgeable on useful, globally applicable information. However, they have no trustworthy way of learning about these changes.
