Denver Schools Adapt To Rising Migrant Students’ Enrollment

There is a significant shift taking on in Denver, Colorado, particularly at McMeen Elementary School. This institution has a reputation for offering dual language instruction and has traditionally welcomed international students.

However, this year has seen a sharp rise in the number of students from Venezuela, a nation beset by political unrest and a faltering economy.

McMeen School currently has 671 kids enrolled instead of 546. Many of these new students had difficult travels before arriving in the United States.

One family, the Salloums, for instance, traveled by foot across seven nations to get to Denver. They encountered some pretty depressing sights on their difficult trek.

The school is struggling to handle the large number of new students. Some courses have a large student body, such as the 32 youngsters in Ms. Zaragoza’s kindergarten class.

Many of these kids are finding it difficult to adjust because they have never attended school. Some of them spend the day sad and unable to concentrate on their studies because they miss their homes and relatives.
