Texas To Arrest Migrants Crossing Border Illegally Under New Law
Authorities in Texas will detain migrants who they believe are trying to enter the country illegally under a new legislation. The Governor of Texas approved the new legislation enabling local law enforcement to detain undocumented immigrants.
The bill, referred to as SB 4, gives Texas law enforcement the authority to detain and attempt to deport immigrants who they believe are breaking the law. Texas’s Republican governor, Greg Abbott, signed the legislation on Monday. Still, it will go into effect in March. Immigrants risk consequences if they break the law.
Among the strictest state immigration laws in the history of the United States in the contemporary era is the SB4 bill. The law allows the authorities to detain, arrest, and imprison migrants on allegations of illegal entry at the state level. Additionally, the judge will mandate those migrants return to Mexico. De facto deportation orders against suspected violators are another power held by Texas magistrate judges. Anyone found to be breaking the legislation could be sentenced to anything from 180 days to 20 years in prison.
The Texas lawmakers approved SB4 earlier this year in an effort to address the immigration situation. Political disputes between civil rights organizations and the Joe Biden administration were brought on by the measure.
At a signing ceremony on Monday, Governor Greg Abbott stated, “The purpose of Senate Bill 4 is to stop the tidal wave of illegal entry into Texas.” Texas has officially enacted Senate Bill 4.
The goal of the bill is to oppose Democratic President Biden. Texas has tried a number of different approaches to end the migrant problem.
