Elon Musk’s Tesla In Labor Disputes With Sweden’s Unions
Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, owns Tesla, an American multinational automotive and clean energy firm that has been in the news recently due to labor problems with Swedish unions and workers.
In a labor dispute, a Swedish court decided against Tesla on Thursday night. A Swedish court decided that PostNord, a postal service provider, is exempt from having to provide license plates to Tesla, the automaker if those plates are being blocked by postal employees.
Strong employee unions in the Nordic region that support the mechanics of Swedish IF Metall are opposing Elon Musk’s Tesla.
On October 27, Swedish Tesla mechanics went on strike in protest of the company’s lack of a collective bargaining agreement.
The walkout by Tesla employees impacted about 130 mechanics at seven locations located throughout Sweden. The failure of talks between Tesla and members of the Swedish metalworkers’ union, IF Metall, over a collective wage agreement prompted a walkout.
Swedish Tesla employees gripe about their pay and benefits being worse than those of other industry workers. Elon Musk was persuaded to sign the pay agreement by them. Tesla, nevertheless, declined to sign the wage contract.
According to Tesla, the company has never signed a collective bargaining agreement globally.
The AKT transport workers’ union in Finland just joined the Tesla solidarity strike.
If Elon Musk does not sign the pay deal, the union will stop the automaker from importing its cars to Sweden.
