Women's Rights Win: Ohio Voters Add Abortion Rights To State's Constitution
Voters in Ohio added the right to an abortion to the state constitution, marking a significant victory for women’s rights. Abortion rights have also been a significant political motivator for Democrats in the US.
With over 57% of the vote, Ohio Issue 1, the Right to Make Reproductive Decisions Including Abortion Initiative (2023), was approved.
The move by Ohio to include abortion rights in the state constitution was applauded by US President Joe Biden. “My administration will continue to protect access to reproductive health care,” Biden added, congratulating Andy Beshear of Kentucky “on his re-election win tonight.”
The constitutional amendment guaranteeing access to abortion has been approved by Ohio voters. This is the most recent success for women’s rights. “The future is bright, and tonight we can celebrate this win for bodily autonomy and reproductive rights,” stated Lauren Blauvelt, co-chair of Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights.
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee’s interim president, Heather Williams, called the vote in favor of abortion rights a “huge victory.”
