All-Women Presidential Race In Mexico

The two front-runners in Mexico’s presidential race are Xóchitl Gálvez, a computer engineer, businesswoman, and politician from Mexico who served as mayor of the Miguel Hidalgo borough of Mexico City, and Claudia Sheinbaum, a politician, scientist, and academic who served as Head of Government of Mexico City.

The date of the next general election in Mexico is June 2, 2024. A new president of Mexico will be chosen by the electorate to a six-year term. Mexico is prepared for an all-female presidential contest as both the main opposition alliance and the ruling Morena party have announced their female presidential candidates for the next election.

“This is the product of decades of work,” said Patricia Mercado, a senator for the Citizens’ Movement party, in her celebration of the impending presidential election.

Mexico granted women the right to vote for the first time in 1953. Mexico is about to elect its first female president. The two female candidates are in favor of abortion rights as well as other women’s rights.

According to feminist historian and researcher Ana Lau Jaiven of Azcapotzalco’s Metropolitan Autonomous University, “both candidates give the image of being strong women.”
