Manipur: Biometric Data Collection for Migrants from Myanmar Starts Today.
Manipur Initiates Biometric Data Collection Campaign for Migrants from Myanmar.
In a significant move towards managing migration patterns, Manipur has launched a campaign to capture and collect biometric data of illegal immigrants from Myanmar. This initiative, which began on July 29, is part of the state's efforts to address the challenges posed by unauthorized immigration. The state Home Department, in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), aims to complete the data collection drive by the end of September 2023.
According to the state Home Department, the campaign's primary objective is to identify and record biometric data of migrants from Myanmar who are residing in Manipur without proper authorization. By leveraging advanced biometric technology, authorities hope to gain a comprehensive understanding of the migration patterns and demographics of the unauthorized immigrant population.
To execute this ambitious project, the Superintendent of Police (SP) in each district of Manipur was entrusted with a pivotal responsibility. Prior to the campaign's commencement, the Manipur Home Department dispatched a letter to each SP, outlining the campaign's objectives, protocols, and deadlines. The collaboration between the state Home Department and the district police is crucial in ensuring a systematic and coordinated data collection process.
The campaign's impetus stems from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) letter No. 25022/102/2018-F.I, dated May 29, 2023. This official communication mandated the collection of biometric information from unauthorized immigrants in Manipur within a specified timeframe, which concludes by the end of September 2023. The Joint Secretary (Home), Peter Salam, cited this MHA letter as the guiding force behind the initiation of the campaign.
