Exclusion of Women's Rights Discussions Hinders Progress in Addressing Rising Female Incarceration Rates
A troubling trend has emerged in discussions surrounding the criminal justice system: the exclusion of women's rights from the narratives of both current and former female prisoners. This omission has resulted in a lack of funding and policy changes urgently needed to address the alarming increase in the criminalization of women, as well as the distressing number of children held in detention alongside their parents. With the number of women and girls in prison surging by nearly 60% since 2000, far outpacing the 22% increase in male prisoners, it is imperative to shed light on the factors contributing to this crisis and advocate for change.
One critical aspect hindering progress is the exclusion of discussions about women's rights within the context of the criminal justice system. By neglecting to address the unique challenges faced by women, policymakers and stakeholders fail to allocate adequate resources and enact necessary policy changes. This exclusion perpetuates a cycle of inadequate support and inhibits the implementation of targeted solutions to address the criminalization of women.
