Republican Lawmakers Express Concerns Over Rising Costs of Caring for Immigrants in Illinois

 

In recent news, Republican lawmakers in Illinois have expressed concerns over the rising costs of providing essential services for undocumented immigrants. They argue that the pressure on Illinois’ healthcare and overall budget will become too much to bear.

However, Governor J B Pritzker has defended the state's efforts, stating that since August, Illinois has provided $240 million for migrants arriving from places like Texas. He believes that providing basic necessities like food, healthcare, and shelter is crucial for these individuals.

The governor and the Illinois Immigrant Impact Task Force recently released a report highlighting several issues affecting migrants and refugees in the state. The report shares recommendations to improve services to immigrant communities and addresses critical concerns facing them.

The Task Force identified a number of issues in the legislation, including immigration detention, citizenship assistance, COVID-19 relief, education access, business development, discrimination prevention, and language access programs.
