International Labour Day, also known as May Day,

This day is celebrated to honor the struggles and sacrifices made by workers in achieving better working conditions, improved wages, and social benefits.

History of International Labour Day

The origins of International Labour Day can be traced back to the United States in the late 19th century. In 1886, thousands of workers across the country went on strike demanding an eight-hour workday. On May 1st, 1886, a large-scale demonstration took place in Chicago's Haymarket Square, where a bomb was detonated, leading to the deaths of several policemen and protesters.

In response, the authorities arrested and executed several labor activists. This event, known as the Haymarket affair, led to the establishment of International Labour Day as a day to commemorate the sacrifices made by workers in their struggle for better working conditions.
