Comoros Resumes Accepting Voluntary Return of Citizens from Mayotte
A recent weeks-long standoff between Comoros and Paris over the deportation of undocumented Comoran migrants from the French island of Mayotte has come to an end. Comoros announced on Monday that it will once again accept its citizens returning "voluntarily" from Mayotte. The conflict between the two nations escalated due to a security operation and political tensions, resulting in the suspension of docking authorization for boats and the refusal to accept deportees from Mayotte.
The tension between Comoros and France began with a security operation in Mayotte, where France aimed to deport thousands of undocumented Comoran migrants. As part of the operation called "Wuambushu" (meaning "Take Back" in the local language), slums were demolished, leading to increased conflicts between Mayotte's youths and security personnel. These events further strained the already fragile relations between the two nations.
The deportation plans and the subsequent refusal of Comoros to accept deportees from Mayotte created a challenging situation with political and humanitarian implications. Comoros claimed that it was unable to handle the influx of its citizens and suspended docking authorization for boats arriving from the neighboring island.
