UK Starts Arresting Migrants to Send Them to Rwanda

The UK government has begun detaining migrants who entered the country illegally as part of their new plan to send these individuals to Rwanda in the coming months. This controversial immigration initiative stems from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s administration.

Officials aim to discourage migrants from undertaking dangerous Channel crossings in small boats to claim asylum in Britain. They believe relocating migrants to Rwanda may reduce incentives for attempting this risky voyage. Over 7,500 have already arrived by sea in 2022, with last week seeing 5 perish.

However, legal challenges threaten implementation. The UK’s highest court previously deemed the Rwanda scheme unlawful, while human rights groups question the treatment of migrants there. Such organizations will likely renew litigation blocking deportation flights.

Still, ministers say they are working swiftly to arrest and detain migrants in preparing for the Rwanda transfers. Photos show immigration officers apprehending individuals, even one pulled from his home in handcuffs. A refugee charity reports ‘tens’ of scared migrants contacting them, uncertain who or when authorities will select for removal abroad.

Some experts warn this panic may prompt hiding rather than seeking assistance. Separately, one report identifies a single voluntary asylum case already sent to Rwanda.

Continued controversy is expected as human rights advocates vehemently oppose the plan over concerns for migrant welfare in Rwanda. Despite legal hurdles, the UK determinedly pursues this highly contentious immigration policy shift.
