The Fight for Democracy and Human Rights in Georgia

Georgia’s parliament desires to form a new law these days. This rule is known as the “Transparency of Foreign Influence” law. Huge number of people in Georgia has been protesting for this law for a long time. Their opinion is this new rule is bad for democracy and human rights in the United States.

The new law states that any non-government organization (NGO) or media outlet that receives more than 20% of its money from another countries should register as an “agent of foreign influence.” The Ministry of Justice can then find and see over these groups, also asking for their data.
Many people are tensed because this law will give the authorities a lot of power over independent groups and media and it can be used to punish those who do not wish to agree with the government.

Independent groups and media in Georgia play a very essential role in forming democracy, protecting human rights, and assisting people in need.
Many Georgian NGOs provide very important services like shelters for victims of violence or treatment for people with addictions. If this new law comes into picture then it will be much more difficult for these groups to do their important role.

People in Georgia does not agree to this law. However, the authorities have been using violence and bullying individuals who do not agree to this regulation. We want the government of Georgia to protect the rights of all and people within the US. Additionally we want them to look and prevent those violent acts.
