New Program to Help Women and Children Migrant Workers in Indonesia



The European Union, in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), has recently started a three-year initiative called ‘PROTECT’ to focus on the lives of women migrant workers, children, and other vulnerable groups in Indonesia. This step assists to create a simple work opportunities, safeguarding labor rights, and combat violence, human trafficking, and illegal migration.


This step was begun by Indonesia's Minister of Manpower, Ida Fauziyah, in an event in Jakarta, delivering performances and exhibitions on labor migration.In 2023 over 270,000 people in Indonesia, 61% of them were women who migrated to the other countries for work, mostly facing abuse, biased laws, and absence of social protection.


PROTECT targets to address these hurdles by ensuring safer migration. The Indonesian government promotes the initiative, by focusing on upgrading the policies and support for migrant workers. The EU, ILO, and UNODC strain on the importance of gender-sensitivity, that includes migration policies and safeguard for trafficking victims. Last till December 2026, this initiative adds up on old EU projects to form an environment that is safer and fairer for Indonesian migrants.
