Uganda Celebrates World Health Day, Advocates For Universal Coverage Together
World Health Day activities were organized in Uganda through collaboration between the Ugandan Ministry of Health, WHO, and various partners. With the overarching theme of “My health, my right”, the goal was to raise awareness about the importance of accessible healthcare and individuals’ right to health. Activities included a public walk, screenings for communicable and non-communicable diseases, and a blood drive. This emphasized prioritizing health as a core human right and cultivating a culture of proactive health management in Ugandan communities.
The WHO Country Office in Kololo hosted the commemorative events, bringing together representatives from government agencies, UN bodies, development partners, and media. This provided a platform to jointly address healthcare challenges through constructive discussion and cooperation. By fostering dialogue and teamwork, partners aimed to strengthen the impact of collective action on advancing health across Uganda.
With upcoming evaluations of the country’s progress on universal healthcare, the Ministry and WHO underscored the critical need for enhanced cross-sector collaboration. Uganda’s Health Minister stressed the collective duty to work towards universal coverage through a “one health” approach uniting divisions, partners, and communities. She encouraged channeling energies towards this shared goal.
Participants engaged in health-promoting activities like a public walk supported by TB and HIV partners. Screenings covered illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, HIV, hepatitis, and TB. While commending Uganda’s gains, the WHO Representative emphasized ongoing efforts like implementation, resource optimization, and empowering communities to accelerate progress on universal coverage amid health crises and socioeconomic challenges.
World Health Day celebrations reinforced commitment to advancing healthcare through collaborative engagement and universal coverage support. By building partnerships and mobilizing resources, Uganda aims to develop adaptable systems that meet all people’s needs regardless of status. As the journey towards universal healthcare continues, these events confirmed Uganda’s steadfast dedication to prioritizing health as a fundamental right.
