India: Telengana to implement policy to reintegrate returning migrants into society
The Indian state of Telangana is developing a new policy aimed at helping migrants who have returned to the region to reintegrate back into society. Millions of Indian migrant workers lost their jobs and livelihoods during the COVID-19 pandemic and had no choice but to return to their home states.
Telangana now wants to support these returning migrants by facilitating their resettlement and helping them find new work opportunities. The proposed policy envisions skills training programs, credit access schemes for self-employment, and initiatives to connect returnees with local employers.
It recognizes that migrants face economic and social challenges upon returning and aims to smoothen their transition home. If implemented properly, the strategy could serve as a model for other Indian states on productively engage returning migrants after the disruption caused by the health crisis.
