Human Rights Report Exposes Iranian Government’s BrutalityHuman Rights Report Exposes Iranian Government’s Brutality

The situation in Iran remains concerning, especially in light of events from a year ago. In September 2022, Mahsa Jina Amini died while in morality police custody.

Her death sparked widespread protests across Iran as people expressed outrage over perceived government overreach, particularly strict rules mandating veiled clothing and behavior for women.

In a new report, Human Rights Watch documented ongoing Iranian government repression. Authorities continue punishing women who contravene hijab directives and businesses that do not enforce such rules.

The report alleges the government used lethal force against protesters, killing hundreds, including children, and arresting thousands during demonstrations across Iran. Those detained allegedly faced torture. Authorities reportedly did not properly investigate such actions and put pressure on victim’s families.

Dissatisfaction with the perceived unfair, controlling government is fueling anger within Iran, according to HRW. The Iranian regime also strictly polices journalists, activists, and ethnic or religious groups, jailing many after unjust trials. Some arrested during protests died under mysterious circumstances.

Ahead of last year’s protest anniversary, authorities sought to quash dissent by detaining and putting activists, artists, lawyers, and victim’s family members on trial. The report further discusses how Iran has increased executions, sentencing some protesters to death for offenses like property damage or harming others, through questionable judicial proceedings where defense choice was limited. The serious situation involves harsh government crackdowns on all opposition.
