Jail Sentences To End For Abusive Men In England And Wales; Are Women At Risk?

 

As the government tries to address the jail overcrowding situation, abusive males in England and Wales will soon be able to leave court under a new sentencing strategy.

The justice minister presented proposals that would allow abusive individuals to serve community service and get out of jail, risking the safety of women in the process.

An impartial government inspector has stated that the new sentencing guidelines put women at risk, as reported in a story by The Guardian. Domestic abuse commissioner Nicole Jacobs has said that the government in Wales and England has jeopardised women’s safety by removing short prison sentences and relieving strain on overcrowded prisons.

Judges may now sentence offenders to suspended sentences in cases where they would have normally given 12-month or shorter jail terms, according to the UK government’s Sentencing Bill. 
According to Nicole Jacobs, women are in danger because of the government. According to the plan, most criminals in England and Wales would not be sentenced to prison for less than a year.
