Pakistan Impose $830 Exit Fee For Afghan Migrants Who Fled Taliban
In an “unprecedented” step, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is charging hundreds of dollars in exit fees to Afghan migrants who are waiting to be relocated to the United Kingdom and other Western nations.
Western diplomats and the United Nations, an intergovernmental organization, have denounced the Pakistani authorities’ intention to charge hundreds of dollars in exit fees for each Afghan migrant who left the Taliban regime.
The Pakistani government’s “unprecedented” action targets unregistered Afghan migrants who are waiting to depart Pakistan as part of resettlement plans for Western nations.
Pakistan has levied a fee of $830 for every Afghan immigrant participating in relocation programs. Five high-ranking Western ambassadors in Pakistan have denounced the most recent action taken by the Pakistani government.
“I know it is very tough economically for Pakistan but really, to try to make money off refugees is really unattractive,” a Western diplomat told The Guardian.
Pakistan’s $830 fee for each Afghan migrant under resettlement schemes has drawn criticism from the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and IOM (International Organization for Migration), two UN agencies that specialize in offering guidance on migration.
