Frustration Grows Among Bangladesh Garment Workers Despite Wage Hike

The government of Bangladesh has announced a new compensation structure for employees of clothing manufacturing units, increasing the minimum salary by 56% on a monthly basis.

However, several labor companies are irritated and dissatisfied with this decision. Monnujan Sufian, the state minister for labor and employment, made the statement following a meeting of a wage board with members from each plant owner and employee, forming a central authority.

The new pay structure will be implemented on December 1. This action follows widespread rallies, which in Bangladesh over the last ten years have been the largest important wage-related protests.

The preceding adjustment to the minimal salary changed in 2018. Tens of hundreds of workers took to the streets, stressing a better month-to-month minimum salary of 8.
