Iranian teen Armita Geravand 'brain dead' after assault by police

 

Armita Geravand, an Iranian teen, is brain-dead following an alleged assault on the Tehran Metro for not wearing hijab, a great blow to women’s rights in Iran. 

16-year-old Armita Geravand was confronted by female police officers for breaking the country’s hijab law. She suffered head injuries and was brought to the hospital. The teenager was declared brain-dead on Sunday by the state-run media.

Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, a Kurdish human rights NGO with offices in Norway, broke the news of the situation of Iranian teen Armita Geravand for the first time on October 3. The teenager suffered grave injuries as a result of the metro incident, according to the Kurdish-focused rights organization. The teen was discovered at the hospital lying motionless with a bandage covering her head and a breathing tube. She was being kept alive.

Armita Geravand’s situation was covered by the official news agency of Iran, Borna, on October 11. Women’s rights advocates claim that she was assaulted by Iranian morality police for breaking the nation’s headscarf law.
