At least 20 injured as Bangladesh workers 'clash' with factory staff

There have been at least 20 injuries following a fight between employees and plant personnel. One of the largest worker protests has taken place in the Bangladeshi suburb of Ashulia, which is close to Dhaka, the country’s capital.

On October 30, some workers invaded the Hamim Group’s Next Collection facility in Ashulia and engaged in physical altercation with the factory staff in order to demand an increase in the minimum wage and a safe working environment.

The altercation injured at least 20 persons. For medical attention, they were brought to Ashulia Women and Children Hospital. Five of them were in quite serious condition. Due to the urgent circumstances, they were moved to Dhaka for better care. The Ashulia hospital treated other patients.

According to Tajul Uddin, the quality supervisor for the factory’s second floor, workers entered the building and began assaulting the employees. The employees demanded a pay raise. The employees claimed that in light of the country’s escalating prices for necessities, they needed a good income in order to maintain a good standard of living.
