Kuwait has suspended all forms of work and entry visas for Filipinos following allegations of a breach of a bilateral labor agreement.
Recent reports suggest that Filipino workers are not allowed to work in Kuwait. This news comes after Kuwaiti authorities implemented measures to limit the entry of foreign workers, which have affected the country's economy.
According to the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs, the suspension of the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Kuwait started in May 2021. The move was due to a recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Kuwait. The department has also advised OFWs in Kuwait to stay in their homes to avoid contracting the virus.
Kuwait is a top destination for Filipino workers, with approximately 180,000 working in the country as of 2021. They mostly work in construction, healthcare, and domestic services. The Philippine government has been negotiating with Kuwaiti authorities to allow the entry of Filipino workers and ensure their safety and protection.
The issue of workers' rights and labor conditions in Kuwait has long been a concern for international organizations and human rights groups. Reports of abuse, exploitation, and mistreatment of foreign workers, particularly domestic workers, have been documented in the country.
