1200 Offshore Workers in UK Strike for Fair Treatment and Better Pay
On Wednesday, 1200 offshore workers in the UK began a 48-hour strike, demanding fair treatment, better pay, and improved working conditions. The workers, who include deck crew, scaffolders, crane operators, pipefitters, platers, and riggers, are employed by Bilfinger UK Limited, Petrofac Facilities Management, Stork Technical Services, Sparrows Offshore Services, and Wood Group.
The strike is the latest action in an ongoing dispute between the workers and oil and gas companies such as Apache, BP, Harbour Energy, Enquest, Ithaca, Repsol, Shell, and TAQA. The union Unite, which represents the workers, claims that these companies are making huge profits and that the workers deserve a much larger share of these profits.
Sharon Graham, the general secretary of Unite, has stated that the union is determined to fight for fair treatment and better pay for its members. According to Graham, "Unite is ready to fight for a long time because the union has to stand up to unchecked corporate greed.
